About the Artist

After two years of textile design, specialising in weaving at Norwich Art School, Alexis went on to graduate with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting and History of Art at Oxford Brookes University, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education international (PGCEi) at Nottingham University, UK.

Fine art and applied art merge to create her paintings. The surfaces combine acrylics with textiles. The study of weaving and drawing inspired the layering of both texture and colour on canvas. Working and experimenting with these two disciplines forms the essence to all of Alexis Halliwell’s art work.

She lived in India for four years. The rich history of print making, textile design, clashing colours and energy from urban life, all inspired her paintings and exhibitions in New Delhi and Mumbai.

Trips to Old Delhi Market provided an eclectic mix of vintage lace, ribbons, leaves and beaded trims; There were streets dedicated to wedding fabrics  and rows of stalls selling silver and gold. These markets provided the inspiration for the India collection.

The architectural paintings from The Netherlands describe textured, more two dimensional street facades. Ornamental gables are decorated with lace and gentle neutral tones and fresh limes complement the atmosphere within the Netherlands. The clear daylight exudes a fresh, more subtle palette.

The lace used in Alexis’ paintings is procured in India. Some additional vintage samples are inherited, family swatches.

Alexis Halliwell has worked and lived in London, Vienna, Amsterdam, The Hague, Moscow, New Delhi and San Jose.
